About Us

National institute of language education and training ( NILET) was formally established by act no. 26th of 2007. Core programme staff assist the Director General in handling administrative matters. NILET operates from No:321/1, High Level Road, Makubura, Pannipitiya.

National Institute of Language Education and Training ( NILET) was formally established by Act No. 26 of 2007 NILET possesses unique features conducive for educational activities in furtherance of its mandate promoting language education and training.

It is located away from hassles of the city to give a touch of relaxation and an atmosphere for research studies. Courses are offered to train interpreters, translators and language teachers.

To become a leading Educator / Trainer in developing bilingual / trilingual skills of staff in public institutions for the provision of an efficient service to the community.
  • Provide quality training to teach Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
  • Conduct research and studies related to language training.
  • Establish a repository of information relating to languages.
  • Generate competent Translators and Interpreters.
  • Conduct language courses for special categories.

To Generate:

  • Competent teachers to teach Sinhala , Tamil and English to those who are desirous of acquiring such knowledge;
  • Competent translators and interpreters in the Sinhala, Tamil and English languages who shall constitute the National Translators service and the National Interpreters Service to be established by written law;
  • Qualified trainers to train language teachers, translators and interpreters in the Sinhala, Tamil and English Languages.
  • Trained persons with trilingual capabilities for the efficient provision of services to the public.
